The YMCA of Dane County informed members of a swim team their program was being moved across town in late November, and parents voiced frustration about the changes.
Relocating the program made it almost impossible for the 300 kids on the swim team to get there, so one-third of the team has left. Some found new teams while others are still looking.
YMCA CEO Carrie Wall said it is the result of budget issues.
The YMCA was half a million dollars short in their 2013 budget, and that led to program and staffing changes.
Wall said it has forced the YMCA to refocus its goals.
“We are not in the future, going to perhaps be as competitive as we once were. In the Y, we’re more about being involved in youth development, teaching kids how to swim, teaching kids water safety,” Wall said.
She said she understands the reaction of parents, but said the shift was to meet the needs of all of its 25,000 members.
