MADISON, Wis. -

A Madison woman avoided a phone scam where the caller asked her to send money for a family member in a foreign country, according to a release.

The 85-year-old woman got the call Wednesday at her 400 block Samuel Drive home and was asked to send money to South America because her grandson was arrested for drugs, according to the release.

Officials said the woman called family to make sure her grandson was not in Uruguay because she had received a similar call Friday and he was at home. The caller on Friday asked the woman to send money because her grandson had hit another car while driving drunk in Uruguay.

The woman wired $3,000 via Western Union after the first call but found out the next day that her grandson was home in Chicago, according to the release.
