Witness info, surveillance images lead police to robbery suspect
Police: Man confessed to robbery, spending stolen money on drugs
Police used witness information and surveillance video to track down a man who allegedly robbed an east side gas station Sunday, according to a release.
John C. Lawton, 52, entered the Kelley Williamson Mobil at 2601 Shopko Drive around 1:10 a.m., officials said. Lawton did not show a weapon but he kept a hand in a pocket, and the employee thought he might have a gun.
According to the release, Lawton had scissors in his pocket, but never showed them.
Witnesses saw Lawton leave the gas station in a van, and provided descriptions of him and the vehicle to police, officials said.
Surveillance images helped responding officers determine a license plate for the van, and police found Lawton at his home, according to the release.
Lawton confessed to robbing the gas station, and told police he had already spent the money on drugs, officials said.
Lawton was arrested on charges of armed robbery.
