The state Department of Transportation is taking photos of license plates in an effort to see if unregistered vehicles or expired registration is a problem.
WLUK-TV reported that the state has hired a private contractor to take pictures of plates, which will then be put into a database.
It's part of a three-pronged study. The first entails collecting license plate info from 2,200 vehicles in eight counties. Surveys will then be mailed to 500 homes.
Finally, the results will be studied with a goal of making the registration process more convenient and cost-effective.
DOT Motor Vehicle Program Specialist Vikki VanDeventer said the survey isn't meant to catch people with expired registration. She said they won't be penalized.
The survey results are expected to be finished by next summer.
