Wis. high-capacity wells pumped more in 2012
Wisconsin high-capacity wells pumped 4.6 percent more water in 2012
A new study says high-capacity wells in Wisconsin pumped more water last year than in 2011.
The state Department of Natural Resources' report says high-capacity surface and groundwater withdrawals totaled 2.3 trillion gallons in 2012, up 4.6 percent in 2011. The increase includes a 34.5 percent jump in groundwater pumped from aquifers.
Agricultural irrigation surpassed municipal withdrawals as the largest use in 2012.
The report attributes the increase largely to last year's drought.
