Wis. agents seize thousands of untaxed cigarettes
70,000 packs seized
Wisconsin revenue agents have seized 70,000 packs of cigarettes that arrived in the state without tax stamps.
The state's excise tax on a pack of cigarettes is $2.52. According to a report in the Wisconsin State Journal, the state would have lost more than $175,000 in revenue on the cigarettes.
Revenue officials said the cigarettes came from a company located on the Winnebago reservation in northeastern Nebraska that's owned by Ho-Chunk Inc.
Deputy Revenue Secretary Jack Jablonski said the cigarettes were bound for retailers on Wisconsin reservations or trust lands for the St. Croix Chippewa, Ho-Chunk Nation and Bad River Band.
He said the regular shipments have been happening for some time. No charges have been filed.
