WAUSAU, Wis. -

A Wausau gay rights march went off without a hitch.

Daily Herald Media reported about 300 people walked to downtown Wausau to demonstrate their support of equal treatment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. It reported the march had a festive atmosphere and was almost anti-climactic after plans for a different gay pride march were canceled.

The head of that event canceled it after Wausau City Council member David Nutting said people should boycott the parade, or, if they went, turn their backs on "deviant-behaving individuals."  Daxx Bouvier said he called it off because participants feared for their safety.

Shannon Thomas, of Wausau organized the separate March for Equality. She said the peaceful event was indicative of the support the Wausau area really has for the LGBT community.
