MADISON, Wis. -

Water service was restored to east side residents Friday afternoon after a water main break caused a buckled road, according to the Madison Water Utility.

Utility spokeswoman Amy Barrilleaux said the broken section "is one of the largest we’ve seen this year."

The utility said the rupture took place at about 6:15 a.m. at the intersection of two 8-inch mains on Cottage Grove Road at Acewood Boulevard.

Barrilleaux said people living within a half-mile of the break either experienced low water pressure or lost service altogether for about 2.5 hours. Residents on the 900 block of Acewood Boulevard were still without water as of noon due to a valve shut off during repair, but service was restored at about 1 p.m.

Barrilleaux said the main break caused a 10-foot-wide sinkhole in the southbound lane of Acewood Boulevard.

Repairs to the broken main are expected to take much of the day Friday.
