MADISON, Wis. -

Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz is backtracking from comments she made comparing Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker's record on women's issues to a slap.

Wasserman Schultz on Thursday issued a statement saying she "shouldn't have used the words I used." Wasserman Schultz on Wednesday said in Milwaukee that "Scott Walker has given women the back of his hand. I know that is stark. I know that is direct. But that is reality."

In her statement Thursday, the Florida congresswoman says her comments shouldn't detract from the broader point she was making that Walker's policies have been bad for women.

A spokeswoman for Walker's Democratic opponent Mary Burke made a similar statement, saying Wasserman Schultz should not have used those terms when referring to Walker's record on women's issues.
