SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. -

No decision was made about eliminating the volunteer fire department at Tuesday night’s financial committee meeting in Sun Prairie.

Earlier this month, the city voted to form a combined fire and EMS department. Meaning the volunteer fire department would need to come to an end.

City officials believe it comes down to response times but fire fighters have said they feel slighted.

Tonight, the public spoke before the finance committee, hoping to reverse the decision.

“I’m not a career firefighter. I don’t get paid for my efforts, but don’t you dare say that we’re uncommitted or unqualified or unprofessional,” said Clint Mueller, volunteer firefighter.

“The only way to stop that finger pointing and solve the problem is to take ownership,” said Daniel Storley, Sun Prairie resident.

As it stands now, the volunteer fire department would need to disband by Jan. 1.

Some firefighters within the department get paid so they would lose their jobs.

Another council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday and the volunteer fire department will again be on the agenda.
