Letters sent to Madison water utility customers from an insurance company are a sales pitch and not affiliated with the city or utility, according to Madison Water Utility.
A release from Madison Water Utility states that customers are getting official-looking letters from HomeServe USA offering insurance for water service lateral lines. The letters look like an urgent notice alerting customers that they have not yet signed up for the insurance program.
The same company sent similar letters in March.
Utility officials said that while it is true that water service line repairs are a homeowner’s responsibility, customers should read the fine print before buying any insurance policy and check with their homeowner’s insurance company to see if lateral damage is already covered.
Some homeowners purchased sewer line insurance through a company called Service Line Warranties. That company was selected by the city to sell optional coverage for sewer lines.
