The U.S. Department of Justice told the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction it must do more to assist disabled students participating in the school voucher program.

The American Civil Liberties Union released a letter sent to the state from the U.S. DOJ in April. The letter said the state "must do more to enforce federal statutory and regulatory requirements that govern the treatment of students with disabilities who participate in the school choice program."

The letter is in response to a complaint filed in 2011 by the ACLU and other advocacy groups. According to the complaint, the groups said the voucher program was discriminating against disabled students in Milwaukee.

A DPI spokesman said the said the letter is being reviewed.
