MADISON, Wis. -

Traffic on Verona Road and Midvale Boulevard was delayed for four hours after a truck hit the Beltline bridge over Verona Road late Wednesday morning.

Around 3:20 p.m. crews were able to get the truck out from under the bridge. Crews then shut down Beltline traffic in both directions so the truck could cross the westbound lanes and start traveling east on the Beltline.

DOT officials said the truck caused significant damage to one of the bridge beams, but the bridge is safe for traffic traveling on the Beltline and Verona Road.

Bridge crews will assess the damage and evaluate solutions on how to safely and efficiently repair the damage, officials said.

Traffic in the area was backed up while crews worked to remove the truck Wednesday afternoon. The incident occurred after 11 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Verona Road.

Officials encouraged motorists to use a signed alternate route of Highway 14 (Park Street exit) and County M to access Verona Road, according to a release.

Wisconsin Department of Transportation officials said the outside shoulder of the westbound Beltline at the interchange will be closed long-term due to the incident.
