A Madison business owner helped police track down stolen iPads with information from tracking software they had installed, official said.
The owners of You Move Me, a moving company at 5321 Old Middleton Road, told police their business was robbed Sunday morning, police said. The robber got into the business by throwing a rock through a window and stole two iPads and money.
One of the stolen iPads was recovered after it was found abandoned in the 4800 block of East Washington Avenue, according to the release.
The iPads had been locked with an online account by the business owner, police said. When the iPads are locked a message comes up saying the iPad has been lost and provides a phone number to call.
The business owner listed his own phone number and actually got a call from a person who had the second stolen iPad, according to the release. The person with the iPad arranged a meeting to sell the iPad back to the store owner for $250.
Police went with the business owner to meet Elijah J. Washington III, 25, of Madison, at a Park Street area location Sunday afternoon to get the iPad back, officials said. Washington claimed he bought the iPad from another person.
Washington was arrested on charges of receiving stolen property.
