An Illinois man died and another one was injured in a single-vehicle crash between Brodhead and the state line early Sunday morning, officials said.
Rock County crews responded to South Hopkins Road in the town of Avon around 2:25 a.m. for reports of a one-vehicle crash with both occupants injured, according to a release from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said a 2008 Chevy Impala was in the middle of the roadway when they arrived on scene.
The driver, 19-year-old Devon Hurd, from Machesney Park, Illinois, was able to get out of the vehicle, according to the release. The passenger, 20-year-old Christopher Huggins, from Rockford, Illinois, was semi-conscious and pinned in the front passenger side.
Due to the severity of Huggins’ injuries, deputies requested Flight for Life, but Huggins died before they could transport him, officials said. Hurd was transported to Mercy Hospital where he was treated and released for his injuries.
Investigators said that Hurd and Huggins were traveling northbound on South Hopkins Road when the Impala began to slide on the gravel road. The Impala left the roadway, where the passenger side hit a grove of trees.
The Impala stopped in the middle of Hopkins Road, investigators said. Hurd and Huggins were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.
The Rock County Sheriff’s Accident Reconstruction Team was called out to investigate possible factors contributing to the crash.
