Teacher fired for being pregnant, unmarried
Pregnancy violates teacher's contract
A unmarried teacher at a Roman Catholic school was fired after becoming pregnant.
The Associated Press reports that Shaela Evenson, who taught sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade literature and physical education at Butte Central in Butte, Mont. for just over eight years, was fired because her pregnancy out of wedlock violated the terms of her contract. According to Patrick Haggarty, the superintendent of Catholic schools for the diocese, Evenson's contract requires her to respect the moral and religious teachings of the Catholic Church in both her professional and personal life. Marriage is one of those teachings.
Evenson is currently pursuing legal action against the school.
