Taste of Madison announced Thursday it raised $58,092 for 51 area nonprofits and charities during its annual Labor Day weekend food and music event.
According to a release, 2013 was the first year the events beverage service was extended to more than one local charity. This year, 30 groups staffed one or more of the 26 beverage stands over the weekend.
The stands were staffed by 10 volunteers per shift per day who earned a flat rate for each shift and collected tips to benefit their organizations, according to the release. Over $16,000 was earned in tip money alone.
Street captains, debris collectors and other key positions were also handled by volunteers who earned $9 toward their nonprofits for every hour worked, organizers said. Other paid volunteer positions included setup, tear-down, recycling removal and other tasks that help attract more than 250,000 guests to the Capitol Square every year.
Taste of Madison is held every year over Labor Day weekend, and this year’s event showcased more than 90 local restaurants, 26 beverage stands and three entertainment stages.
