SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. -

Sun Prairie police said a 43-year-old suicidal man was detained after a short foot pursuit Wednesday night.

Police responded to a home in the 200 block of North Bristol Street at 12:10 p.m. to check the welfare of the man. Lt. Kevin Konopacki told News 3 they believe Douglas Crossen had a rifle and a handgun.

Crossen was taken to the police station to be evaluated by EMS after the incident ended around 6 p.m., officials said. He did not have any weapons on him when he came out of the house.

He was then arrested on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and intoxicated use of a firearm.

Police searched the home for evidence and weapons Wednesday night.

Dane County dispatch said an automated call to residents in the area was sent out asking anyone within a six-block radius to stay away from their homes and away from the area.

Peace Lutheran Church and school was on soft lockdown at request of the police department. Konopacki said all students will be allowed to go home from school with instructions to avoid the area of North Bristol and Windsor streets.

Police said they had phone contact with Crossen but lost it. They also used a bullhorn to communicate with him. Officers said they don't know why Crossen was distraught.

“With a situation like this, we’re going to use time to our advantage, to do what we can right now to try and make contact with him. We’re not able to make contact with him via phone right now, so we’ve got other resources that we’re going to attempt,” said Konopacki.

No one else was in the home. Police were asking residents to avoid the area.

The following roads were blocked to traffic: North Bristol Street and Cliff Street, North Bristol Street and Oak Street, and Windsor Street and North Street.
