Streets officials warn of slippery commute
Cold temperatures forcing Madison to use sand, not salt
Cold temperatures will keep Madison street crews from using salt Wednesday on area roads to help keep roads clean.
Forecasters are calling for an inch of snow to fall on the Madison area throughout the day.
Streets officials said they have had crews out on main roads since early Wednesday, but they have had to use sand instead of salt, since salt becomes ineffective in temperatures below 15 degrees.
Streets officials said they will focus on 32 main routes throughout the city, which include the city's main arterials, main connector streets, bus routes and streets around schools and hospitals.
Crews will also sand hills, intersections and curves on residential streets through the evening.
