MADISON, Wis. -

A line of severe thunderstorms that pushed through southern Wisconsin Monday afternoon ahead of a cold front produced large hail.

One thunderstorm developed north of Richland Center and tracked southeast across Sauk and Dane counties between 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

There were many reports of large, golf ball-sized hail.

Linda Wagner with American Family Insurance said there were 420 auto claims and 260 property claims as of Tuesday morning. She said additional staff are bing called in to assist and a portable drive-in site is expected to be established.

Homeowners are advised to check soft metals like eaves and downspouts for damage, Wagner said.

The fast movement of the thunderstorms prevented heavy amounts of rainfall from falling over areas that remained wet from recent storms. The severe thunderstorm watch for southern Wisconsin was canceled just before 6 p.m.
