DEFOREST, Wis. -

Authorities said it appeared a wolf found dead on the interstate roadside last week was struck and killed by a vehicle.

The Wisconsin State Patrol said it received a report of a wolf carcass by Interstate 94 eastbound near the Sauk and Columbia county line on March 26 at 11:30 a.m.

Patrol Inspector Troy Larsen responded to the area to find the dead wolf. It appeared the wolf had been struck by a vehicle. Sgt. James Kicmol said Friday that law enforcement had not received a report of the accident.

The State Patrol asked the Department of Natural Resources for guidance on handling the wolf carcass, since it is uncommon to find wolves in southern Wisconsin, according to the report.

The DNR requested the wolf transported to the Mackenzie Center near Poynette.

Kicmol said the agency did not have any information about the sex, weight or age of the wolf.
