Sheriff warns of scammer asking for bank information
Caller claims to be employee of Dodge County Felony Fraud Division, officials say
Dodge County sheriff’s deputies warn residents of phone scams where the caller claims to be an employee of Dodge County.
A resident reported a woman caller said she was an employee of the Dodge County Felony Fraud Division, according to a release. The caller asked for bank account information under the pretense that the resident’s wife wrote a check that bounced, and he needed to give the caller the information in order to avoid prosecution or suspension of his wife’s vehicle registration.
“At no time does the sheriff’s office contact individuals via telephone to retrieve financial information of banking account numbers,” said Dodge County Sheriff Patricia Ninmann in the release. “This is another example of scams that people are attempting to portray on the citizens. Please be aware of the potential scams and at no time should you ever provide your personal or bank information over the phone.”
Officials said if residents receive a similar call to ask the caller to provide documentation via the U.S. mail for review. They suggest if the caller becomes aggressive to hang up.
