City of Madison officials expect severe traffic delays starting next week for a reconstruction project that will limit East Johnson Street to one lane of traffic.
The city and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation have awarded the contract to reconstruct East Johnson Street between North Butler and North Baldwin streets to R.G. Huston Company, of Cottage Grove, according to a release.
The project starts the week of May 5, and will include new asphalt pavement, concrete curb and gutter, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water main, traffic signals, street lights and driveway aprons, officials said. Sidewalks will also be replaced as needed to repair any damaged sections or to install sanitary sewer laterals.
Construction is expected to continue for approximately six months, according to the release.
A signed, alternate route for Johnson Street using Bassett Street, West Washington Avenue, the Outer Loops and East Washington Avenue will be posted, officials said.
Metro Transit will have several routes detoured with limited stops on East Johnson Street, according to the release. All businesses in the area will remain open, and pedestrian access will be maintained to all businesses.
Officials encourage motorists to use alternate routes during the construction.
