The Grant County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a potential scam involving a man who calls residents claiming to be the Grant County sheriff.
Based on a report from the Dickeyville Police Department, the scammer identified himself as an agent for the New York Bureau of Criminal Investigation and told the phone call recipient that they owed money for a loan.
On a second call back, the caller this time claimed to be Grant County Sheriff Nate Dreckman and attempted to collect money for a loan.
It is believed the same person called each time.
The victim lost about $1,100.
Sheriff Nate Dreckman said the Grant County Sheriff’s Office does not make phone calls in attempts to collect debts and should the sheriff’s office receive a court order to collect a debt, it would be done in person by a uniformed deputy sheriff.
Dreckman said citizens should never give out information to someone who calls unsolicited. Anyone with reservations about a call should ask for a call back number, hang up, and contact your local law enforcement or a trusted person to get an opinion before you take action.
