MADISON, Wis. -

Calls placed to Wisconsin residents and businesses claiming to be a sales pitch from Google are a scam, according to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.

The pre-recorded messages claim to be selling advertisements in products such as Google Maps. Those who have reported the calls say they’re fairly constant, even after they have asked a live representative to take them off their contact lists.

In the call, the receiver is asked to press a key to reach a representative or another key to be taken off the call list. State officials said it’s best to just hang up. If you touch any keys, your number will be marked as “live” in the scammer’s system and will likely lead to more calls.

Google has said it does not place robocalls and will not ask you to “claim your free website.”
