FITCHBURG, Wis. -

Police said robbers attacked a woman with pepper spray before snatching her purse Friday night.

The Fitchburg Police Department said a woman was on the 3300 block of Leopold Way at about 11:50 p.m. when three people who were wearing masks approached her.

According to the report, the victim was sprayed with a chemical, visually impairing her, and the robbers then grabbed for her purse.

Police said the robbers and the victim struggled, but the robbers made off with her bag and its contents, which included a cellphone, cash and other belongings.

A police K-9 attempted to track the robbers but was unsuccessful, police said.

One of the suspects was wearing blue jeans and a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt with a white "squiggle" pattern, according to the report. The other two robbers were wearing dark clothing.

The victim was taken to a local hospital for pepper spray exposure.
