Wisconsin state Sen. Fred Risser has been honored as one of six World War II veterans serving in a state legislature.
Risser received the Civic Medal of Honor award this week from the National Conference of State Legislatures.
The 86-year-old Risser is a Democrat from Madison who has been in the Legislature since 1957. He is the longest serving member of any state legislature in the country.
Risser joined the Navy just before his 18th birthday and just days before the Germans surrendered in 1945. The Japanese surrendered just before he finished boot camp.
He served in Panama before returning to the U.S. and used the G.I. bill to earn his undergraduate and law degrees.
Others honored were from Georgia, New Mexico, Virginia, Idaho and New York.
