A pilot was injured after his helicopter crashed in a corn field in Monroe County Thursday at about 10:30 a.m.
Monroe County Sheriff Pete Quirin said the pilot was crop dusting when the crash happened in Tunnel City.
Rescue crews were able to find the pilot in the field because they were in contact with him by cell phone. Fort McCoy sent a helicopter to assist in locating the crash. Once the crew found the site, they hovered overhead until responding crews arrived.
The pilot told rescue crews he thought he injured his back and leg. The pilot was carried out of the field and was transported to Tomah Memorial Hospital. He was then flown to a La Crosse hospital.
Quirin said the FAA will investigate the cause of the crash, which happened at 20536 Glider Avenue in Tomah. The NTSB and the Department of Agriculture are also involved in the case. The Tomah and Oakdale fire departments also assisted the Monroe County Sheriff's Department.
