FITCHBURG, Wis. -

An investigation from the sheriff’s office revealed Fitchburg Fire Department had an unauthorized slush fund.

The department sold old equipment and then kept the money to make new purchases instead of going back to the city.

None of the money went to fire fighters directly but the city attorney says the department needs to justify its purchases.

“It’s a question of accountability. What we do here is we have a budgeting process. Everyone needs to come in and justify the expenses that they make,” said Mark Sewell, Fitchburg city attorney.

The department sold things like breathing aides and chain saws to other fire departments.

No criminal intent or activity is suspected, according to the investigation report.
