Republican legislators want Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel to investigate how documents from a secret investigation into Gov. Scott Walker's recall campaign were leaked to a newspaper.

Prosecutors launched an investigation in 2012 into whether Walker and his fundraisers illegally coordinated with outside groups during the recall. The state Supreme Court halted the probe in 2015.

The Guardian released hundreds of pages from the investigation Wednesday that show Walker and his fundraisers solicited business executives to give to the Wisconsin Club for Growth.

Whoever leaked the documents committed a crime.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and Reps. Jim Steineke and John Nygren sent a letter Thursday to Attorney General Brad Schimel asking him to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the leak. Schimel tweeted he was weighing his options. His spokesman says he wouldn't discuss details that could jeopardize a potential or ongoing investigation.
