MADISON, Wis. -

A Republican state senator says he has concerns about adding more workers to collect delinquent taxes because he says Wisconsin Revenue Department workers are "mean and heartless."

Republican Sen. Glenn Grothman made the comments Wednesday during a meeting of the Joint Finance Committee. The committee is considering Gov. Scott Walker's proposal to add 61 new positions at the Revenue Department, 15 of which would be dedicated to collecting delinquent taxes.

Grothman voted for adding the positions, but says he is conflicted because, "Sometimes these guys are unnecessarily mean and heartless."

A spokeswoman for the department did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

About $1 billion in delinquent taxes owed in Wisconsin.

The committee voted unanimously to add the positions.
