MADISON, Wis. -

Justices in the Wisconsin Supreme Court said they will not investigate who leaked documents to the Guardian US earlier this year regarding a John Doe investigation of Gov. Scott Walker's campaign and conservative groups.

In a decision released Monday afternoon, three justices on the court released a statement saying they would reject a request by Attorney General Brad Schimel to investigate the leaks.

"It is true that the judicial branch has authority to protect and enforce its orders," wrote Chief Justice Pat Roggensack, Justice Michael Gableman and Justice Annette Ziegler. "In our tripartite form of government, however, it is the executive branch that investigates and prosecutes potential crimes. The executive branch remains free, subject to the applicable laws governing that branch, to investigate and/or prosecute criminally individuals who may have unlawfully disclosed John Doe evidentiary materials in potential violation of criminal statutes, if they apply."
