MADISON, Wis. -

Madison Metropolitan School District Superintendent Dan Nerad is waiting on a contract proposal from the school board in Birmingham, Mich, after receiving a job offer on Monday night.

The Birmingham public school board approved an offer. The administrators in the Detroit suburb said that they want him to start July 1.

Although Nerad's contract with the Madison district doesn't end until next spring, he said he hopes for a smooth transition.

"We don't know who that is. We don't know where that person is coming from," Nerad said. "But again, I can't underscore enough, for whatever time I have here, I'm going to remain focused on our priorities in the Madison Metropolitan School District and I'm going to do whatever I can to assist this school board in ensuring a good transition and leadership."

School Board President James Howard said district officials hope to have a permanent replacement for Nerad by next year.
