MADISON, Wis. -

A shoplifting suspect punched a Walmart security guard in the head and nearly ran him and another employee over while fleeing, according to Madison police.

The incident at the Walmart at 7202 Watts Road started at around 5 p.m. on Saturday when the woman was called out by a 24-year-old security staff for concealing merchandise in her purse, according to police.

Officers said Laura A. Shidell, 32, of Middleton, had stuffed several pairs of leggings and warming oil in her purse and went to checkout items in her cart without including the items in her purse. When a security officer called her out she became outraged, threw the stolen items to the floor and yelled obscenities at the security team, according to police. Officers said she punched the security officer in the head and got into her car and drove at the security team.

The security officers told police she gunned the engine and accelerated toward them before slamming on the brakes, coming within five feet of hitting them.

The security officers got her license plate information and police spotted Shidell's car on University Avenue near Allen Boulevard and pulled her over.

Shidell was arrested on suspicion of second-degree reckless endangerment, battery, resisting an officer, disorderly conduct and retail theft.
