Police: Student accessed professor’s data
UW-Platteville police make arrest
A burglar broke into a University of Wisconsin – Platteville building and accessed computerized data of several professors, according to campus police.
Officers said Neel V. Patel, 21, of Janesville, got into Gardner Hall on Dec. 12 by requesting assistance to enter a building to retrieve his wallet and was able to run a program to crack security codes and get access to a professor's login credentials.
Computer records also showed Patel's computer was used to access four professor's computers between Oct. 2 and Dec. 9, according to a criminal complaint. Police said they also found a bolt cutter in Patel's vehicle.
Patel was formally charged Wednesday with burglary, possession of burglary tools, theft, criminal damage to property, modifying computer data and eight counts of accessing computer data.
