FITCHBURG, Wis. -

A Fitchburg police car was totaled overnight in a hit-and-run crash, officials said. Police are still searching for the driver.

Sgt. Thomas Schmit said a Fitchburg officer pulled up to assist another officer on a traffic stop at Verona Road near Williamsburg Way at 3:06 a.m.

A passing car rear-ended the department's Ford Crown Victoria and fled, Schmit said.

No one was inside the police vehicle and no one at the scene was injured. However, the driver has not been located and his or her condition is unknown, according to police. The car that struck the squad was found abandoned near the scene.

The Fitchburg police car was totaled and equipment in the trunk will likely have to be replaced, Schmit said.

"It's just a piece of equipment and we'll replace it," Schmit added. A total figure for the cost of damage from the crash was not available, the sergeant said. But he said it's likely in excess of $10,000.
