MADISON, Wis. -

Police responded to a possible dog fight on Madison’s west side Tuesday night, according to a release.

A witness told police the dogs’ owner was trying to toughen up his pit bulls by having them fight around 6:26 p.m., according to the release.

Officials said when they arrived to the apartment building in the 5800 block of Raymond Road about 20 people and four pit bulls were outside.

The dogs were being led away on leashes when officers stopped two men who had the pit bulls in questions, according to the release.

Darnarius D. Haywood handed a leash to a 15-year-old Madison boy and took off running, officials said. Haywood was later found hiding inside an area apartment.

The teen told officers the dogs were only play fighting, according to the release.

Haywood was arrested on charges of obstructing, bail jumping and criminal trespass. The teen was cited for not having a dog license.
