Police: MSCR employee arrested on charges of sexual assault
Summer employee allegedly had physical contact with 14-year-old
A Madison School Community Recreation program summer employee was arrested Thursday on charges of second-degree sexual assault, according to a release.
Martez M. Malone, 22, of Madison, was arrested after police investigated the sexual assault that allegedly happened Wednesday at Blackhawk Middle School at 1402 Wyoming Way, officials said.
Malone is accused of having physical contact with a 14-year-old student inside the school and involved inappropriate touching.
"We talked with the victim. We talked with the suspect. He has denied any culpability, but based on what she told us and some other evidence we've gathered, we did have probable cause to arrest him for second degree sexual assault," Madison Police Department Spokesman Officer Joel DeSpain said.
DeSpain said the tentative charge is second degree sexual assault because the alleged victim is younger than 16-years-old.
He also said he thinks the situation isn't widespread.
"Unfortunately, there is this situation that has developed," DeSpain said. "But I really think that it's an isolated crime that's taken place and shouldn't be something that people should take a look at and say MSCR has got a problem. I think it's a very isolated situation."
Rachel Strauch-Nelson, strategic communications coordinator for Madison Metropolitan School District, said background checks are conducted for all MSCR summer employees and applicants must pass the background check before being hired.
Strauch-Nelson said Malone was hired in 2010, with the responsibility of leading afternoon programs.
All MSCR summer employees also receive training in a variety of areas including sexual harassment, Strauch-Nelson said.
Malone is suspended without pay pending the outcome of the investigation, Strauch-Nelson said.
