MADISON, Wis. -

A Madison man is accused of faking his own kidnapping and taking thousands of dollars and a car from his ex-girlfriend.

Detectives said Lee K. Richardson, 39, convinced his 38-year-old ex-girlfriend in November 2012 that he was being held by men who would either torture or kill him if she did not leave regular random payments at a mailbox in Middleton.

The woman told police she was threatened during phone calls while talking to the kidnappers. One of the men identified himself as “Hector.”

The victim recently stopped making payments.

Her car was stolen in July and she was told it was collateral to keep her making payments.

Police pulled over the victim’s car on Wednesday and Richardson admitted to the fake kidnapping, according to police.

Richardson was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle without the owners’ consent and threats to injure.

Richardson appeared in court Friday and bond was set at $7,500.
