Burglar had items reported stolen June 11, officials say

MADISON, Wis. -

A Madison man was arrested when a downtown resident called police after spotting the burglar in his residence, according to a release.

The man thought he saw the burglar leaving his residence on the 600 block North Frances Street Monday night, according to the release.

Officials say Gary P. Howard II, 21, of Madison, was found inside an apartment building on Iota Court.

Howard claimed to be visiting a friend, according to the release.

Officials say a laptop that was reported stolen June 11 from the North Frances Street building was inside Howard's backpack.

Officials say other electronics and a watch were also reported stolen June 11.

Howard denied burglarizing either building and claimed the laptop belonged to a girlfriend, according to the release.

Howard was arrested on tentative charges of burglary, trespassing and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the release.

Officials say he was also arrested on warrants for theft, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and bail jumping.
