MADISON, Wis. -

Officer Teresa McKenzie and her K9, Josh, were among those called to respond to a residential burglary on April 24.
They arrived at the 2700 block of Milwaukee St at 7:30 p.m. after a family reported that their home had been broken into, according to police. The family reported that a wallet, backpack and electronics were taken from the home.
McKenzie wrapped a gauze pad around the damaged door’s handle and placed it in a plastic bag. The police dog, Josh, then sniffed everyone in the house, distinguishing odors not essential to the case from those left by the criminal, according to police.
K9 Josh sniffed the gauze in the plastic bag and then began tracking. He headed east on Milwaukee St then north of North Marquette Street, according to police.
He found identifications cards that belonged to the stolen wallet. Josh headed north on Union Street. There he found the victim’s discarded wallet.
The burglar is still at large.
