OSHKOSH, Wis. -

A group in Oshkosh that wants to drastically lower the fine for marijuana possession is upset that the city council won't act on its petition.

The group wants to lower the fine for possessing 25 grams or less of marijuana from $325 to $25.

WLUK reported that the council accepted and filed the petition Tuesday, but otherwise didn't take any action. That means the fine stays $325.

Councilwoman Caroline Pankse made a motion to reduce the fine, but it died for a lack of second. She was surprised the council didn't recognize a petition with 4,000 signatures.

Councilman Steve Herman said he can't support reducing punishment for a crime.

Petitioner Mark Kelderman said the group won't give up. Other community members said they're happy the council didn't change the fine.
