WISC EDITORIAL AGENDA 2013 – OUR CLIMATE – DANE COUNTY PREPAREDNESS

06/30/13

Against the backdrop of President Obama’s announcement of his plans to enact new rules regulating carbon emissions, Dane County Executive Joe Parisi last Thursday held the first of three scheduled public forums on local climate change preparedness. And while the Obama plan, in the absence of any Congressional leadership on the issue, has all the makings of fledgling first steps that likely face litigation and delays, Parisi, and Dane County citizens move resolutely forward.

Indeed, one of the remarkable aspects of the climate change discussions right now is while so many key political leaders ignore the irrefutable science of climate change, and look increasingly silly doing so, citizens are simply taking matters into their own hands. The overwhelming majority of citizens can’t be bothered any more with irresponsible political inaction. Rather they are responding to calls like that of County Exec. Parisi to plan for the inevitable severe weather events, and help think through ways to reduce local carbon footprints. Sooner or later politicians and policies are bound to catch up.
