For us, reform of our increasingly dysfunctional government begins with changing the way district boundaries are re-drawn every ten years. Right now the system is rigged so that lawmakers actually pick their voters rather than a system that allows for voters to determine competitive races. That will only change if honest, ethical lawmakers make it change. And that can only start with public hearings on bills mandating change.
Today we join with at least a half dozen other editorial voices around the state, including the Wisconsin State Journal and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and the Beloit Daily News in asking State Senator Mary Lazich and State Representative Tyler August to schedule public hearings on redistricting reform bills in their respective Houses. These two lawmakers control scheduling of these bills and have so far not allowed them to come up for hearings. You can join us by contacting Sen. Lazich and Representative August and telling them you want a chance to be heard. Perhaps together we can get the good government this state deserves.
