Rep. Pocan's Perspective
Pursuing bi-partisanship despite difficulty
It was interesting to have Wisconsin Congressman Mark Pocan in to meet with our editorial board this week, on the same day in fact that a Wisconsin State Journal story appeared headlined “prospects brighten” for a new budget deal. Pocan quoted information he and his caucus-mates were getting from insiders who said the content of the talks did not match the optimism of the pronouncements from Budget Committee chairs Congressman Paul Ryan and Senator Patty Murray.
Pocan went on to tell us since the latest Congressional Budget Office numbers show three-quarters of the deficit is the result of un- and under-employment his focus will continue to be creating jobs and growing the economy. Easier said than done in this dysfunctional Congress.
But Pocan is trying, more than others in our view. His support for Ryan’s immigration efforts, good working relationship with Republican colleague Reid Ribble, and membership in the bi-partisan Problem Solvers group are all genuine examples of reaching across the aisle to get things done. They position Pocan well for the day when some common sense returns to Washington, a day he and we believe will come.
