GRADUATION FOR FAMILIES

06/18/13

As we continue to learn more about what works in terms of helping all of our kids achieve in school and prepare for successful adult lives we are recognizing the need to get kids ready to learn well before they start school. That can be a real challenge for many reasons including families with no track record of success in formal education. Surely, being prepared to learn is a critical factor in closing the achievement gap.

The Center for Families here in Madison has partnered with United Way of Dane County to offer the Parent-Child Home program, an intensive program for 3 to 4 year old children and their families involving regular home visits and donations of creative toys and tools to promote literacy and school preparedness. Madison is one of a small number of such programs nationally, but other communities have shown great retention rates and other indicators of success.

The Madison program’s first graduation class is Thursday night. And that’s worth celebrating. But even more exciting and important are the graduations to come for which these children are now better prepared.
