WALKER’S PROPOSAL A STIGMA FIGHTER
Governor Scott Walker’s proposal to include in his budget $29 million for treatment of mental illness is the next in a series of long overdue steps to provide needed and responsible care to people with mental illnesses. One of the last states in the nation to offer insurance parity for mental illness, Wisconsin leaders have inexplicably failed to acknowledge the rights and needs of people with mental illnesses. And that has only added to the stigma that is one of the most unfair and cruel aspects of having a mental illness.
To be sure, investing in mental health is a fundamentally conservative act. It will actually save money in decreased intervention and increased productivity for people with mental illnesses. And much more remains to be done. But by making the commitment, Governor Walker makes it possible to treat people with mental illnesses with respect and dignity. We should expect nothing less.
