GROWING AN ACADEMIC MODEL

One of the more frustrating parts of the current achievement gap discussion is the allegation that “nothing is being done.” That’s simply not true. What is being done has not been enough. But that doesn’t mean it hasn’t improved the situation and isn’t an important part of the eventual solution.

A case in point is the Simpson Street Free Press. The Free Press’s rigorous newsroom-based academic program, its Literacy Partnership initiative and its leadership training strategies have led to successful academic achievement for Dane County young people for 20 years. These young people are learning and doing and going on to higher education. In others words the Simpson Street Free Press is addressing the achievement gap.


This week the Free Press kicks off its new After-School Academic Academies and expands its Literacy Partnership. That’s great. They are a model for academic achievement and closing the gap.
