Slowly but surely we are beginning to realize how important it is for school children to have access to healthy foods. To the surprise of some when kids have healthy food available they eat it and like it. To the surprise of no one, fresh, locally sourced foods in our schools is good for the environment, family farms, children and the local economy.
The state Legislature passed a Farm to School grants program three years, but failed to fund it. That needs to be addressed, and the statewide public health nonprofit Health First Wisconsin is working on it. The group is working to rally a base of grassroots supporters to press for state-level funding of Farm to School. You can learn more at www.makefarm2schoolhappen.org.
Wisconsin schools need to get in the game here. This makes sense and we hope you’ll join us in supporting Farm to School.
