BARABOO, Wis. -

Police have a man in custody after a standoff overnight in Baraboo.

According to Baraboo police, the standoff began around 10:30 p.m. Sunday and lasted more than 2 1/2 hours.

Police were called to a duplex on the corner of Third Avenue and Birch Street on reports of shots fired.

Police said when they got to the duplex, they met some people outside, several of whom became violent.

"There were a number of people in the residence," said Lt. Rob Sinden of the Baraboo police department. "Originally we had 4 individuals exit the residence. We were able to get them out, have them come with us. Upon further questioning we found out there was an additional 5 individuals -- 4 females and one …the suspect."

Police said they learned from those individuals that the man was a felon inside the home, and he wouldn't come out.

Emergency response teams and a critical incident negotiation team were called in and surrounded the home before the standoff ended peacefully.
